There are many different warmups and variations thereof. Here are a few that we have picked up over the years. Create your own variations to make your practice time more interesting. Use of a metronome on picking exercises is encouraged. It will give you a guage for progress and also improve your 'tightness' in a band situation 1. Chromatic Ascension - even Start with your first 4 fingers on frets 1,2,3,4 of the 6th string. Work up the fretboard 1-2-3-4 using alternate picking then move up a string. When you finish the 1st string, go back to the 6th string and move up a position 2,3,4,5. Repeat until you're up to the 12th position then work back down the fretboard. 2. Chromatic Ascension - odd Same as above only use just three fingers so that when you move up a string you are picking an upstroke. 3. Finger Independence Place your hand on the 6th string with your fingers on frets 1- 4. Now go through the fingerings below one time on each string. Do this as a daily exercise to build strength and speed.
4. Finger Independence 2
Place all 4 fingers on the 6th string on adjacent frets. Lift fingers 1&3 while keeping 2&4 on the fretboard, then alternate by lifting 2&4 while keeping 1&3 on the fretboard. Repeat till you just can't take it anymore :) 5. Finger Stretches Place your hand on the 6th string in the first positing. Staying in the first position play up through each string with the following pattern using fingers 1-4. Each pattern stretches between different adjacent fingers.
